Sprint Releases Kyocera Echo

Recently, Sprint has released the Kyocera Echo, a phone with a double touch screen. The phone appears to be a normal smartphone, but it has special hinges that allow the second screen to snap back under the first one. The two screens create what looks like one big screen, but they can display different things on each screen. Moreover, it allows people to do things like be on Facebook and text at the same time. However, unfolding the phone to reveal its second screen is a complicated process that frustrates many people. In addition, if both screens are not showing at the same time, the phone appears to be extremely clunky. This brings up possible issues with the phone's design.

I do not believe that this phone will do well in the market. This is because consumers are already so accustomed to iPhones, Blackberries, and other phones that allow them to access Internet easily that have relatively slim designs. I think that it was a creative idea to release a phone with two screens that can function independently at the same time, but because the second screen on this phone is so difficult to unhinge, \i think that changes in the design must be made. Also, I think that we must take caution when buying products like these. I think that this phone could be potentially dangerous, because way too much would be going on at once. Today, we already have so many problems with car accidents that are caused by people being distracted by their cell phones. If a driver is on both Facebook and texting while driving, it will be even more dangerous and distracting. Overall, while I do see the good intentions behind this phone, I do not believe that it will do well in the market.

Best Buy Restricts Sales on iPad 2

Best Buy, one several retailers selling the iPad 2, has recently explained that it is restricting iPad 2 sales. This is because it has struggled with supply constraints with the iPad. Best Buy spokesman Jeff Haydock explained that this is a customary practice for the company, and that they are delighted by customer's responses to Apple's new product.Best Buy is not the only company experiencing restricted supply of the iPad 2. IHS iSuppli explained that the iPad 2 might suffer from parts-supply shortages for its electronic compass, its battery, and possibly the touchscreen glass because of the the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Apple's online store now has delays of up to a few months for the iPad 2.

Each time I go to Best Buy, I see so many people playing with the iPad 2. There are always lines of people behind them waiting to experience the new technology. People are so anxious to buy the iPad, which is why these shortages exist. At first, I did not see the purpose of the iPad, and was sure that it would fail. I am extremely surprised by how well it is doing. I now see how popular the device is, and I see the high demand that exists today. With the shortages that exist right now, I believe that Apple needs to work very hard to meet the high demands that exist.

Samsung's Series 9 Makes a Statement

While many companies are trying to compete in the new tablet industry, another interesting development came out from the Samsung camp as they release the Series 9. This notebook is similar to the MacBook Air which was released by Apple in 2008. Nearly three years after the release of their product, Samsung brings about something that is almost as good as the Air. I think this is a huge development for all the Apple competitors. While many consumers may prefer Apple, there are options to all of their equipment. If a person wants a specific product from Apple, that product is now available at another company.

I also think the gap has been reduced between Apple and other consumer electronic groups. It took years for a company to develop something like this in the notebook market, and the same for MP3 players. Now, companies are developing tablets much quicker with relation to the iPad. I think we are still ages away from someone introducing a new product before Apple, but they gap is getting closer instead of further. Maybe Samsung, or Dell, or Motorola's Google powered products can finally close the gap.

For now, Apple remains on top with competitors closing in.

Best Buy's performance

Following the 2008 recession, the United State’s economy has been recovering relatively faster than any other country around the world. Due to both effective monetary and fiscal policies imposed by the government, consumer spending has strengthen and has risen to 0.7% due to a rise in personal income by 0.3% in February, according to the Commerce Department. Better consumer spending has positively affected different markets in the economy. For the consumer electronics market, this meant more demands and higher profits. Keeping in mind the competitiveness in the consumer electronics industry, many businesses are facing major challenges by their competitors. For instance, according to an article published in Wall Street Journal, Best Buy has suffered from a slight bump. Being one of the largest retailer stores that offer a wide range of electronics especially TVs, Best Buy reported a decrease in its sales of TVs in December. This is mainly due to the change in consumer demands as technology has been improving. This has not only caused a decrease in sales and profits but also a decline in its stock value, which now costs half its average value.
However, Best Buy has been taking the necessary steps and procedures to keep its reputation and stand in the industry. Now, it will be focusing on providing the stores with more smart phones and has also decided to shut some of its retail TV stores in both Turkey and China. According to analysts, they predict the full recovery of Best Buy as it is marching on the right path.

In my opinion, I think although Best Buy has lost a portion of its sales due to TVs, nonetheless, its ability to identify its problem and take the right measurements to recover is what it matters. The article proves that Best Buy is a competitive business that focuses on maintaining its stand in the industry therefore will be a good choice for investments.

Verizon's New Thunderbolt: A Revolutionary Phone

Several people today have data plans with their cell phones, which gives them access to the Internet 24/7. Most phones run on the 3G network, which is fast, but not the fastest out there, as there is now a fourth-generation wireless service. Verizon Wireless has advanced into this new wireless network. Verizon has recently announced that on Thursday it will begin selling the "HTC Corp. ThunderBolt", their first 4G phone. While Verizon has had the 4G network before, it was only available for laptop air cards. This is the first time that Verizon will be selling an actual 4G phone. The Thunderbolt allows Verizon to compete with Sprint in "the 4G game". While Verizon's Thunderbolt seems very similar to Sprint's 4G smartphone, the Thunderbolt has a larger screen and a larger battery, that will work better with the 4G connection. It has been reported that Verizon's connection speed is significantly faster than its competitors.

I believe that Verizon's new phone will be revolutionary because the faster net work makes it a more advanced phone. This phone has a huge appeal because several people want a faster network on their phones. I find it extremely frustrating when a page won't load on my cell phone. With today's fast-paced world, it is important that our technology stays up to speed with us. I believe that the Thunderbolt will be revolutionary in the cell phone world. In addition, I see there being many more 4G phones available in the near future.

Apps!

While major consumer electronics companies like Apple, Motorola and Sony are extending their product lines, a new competitive market has been growing rapidly: Apps Market. Apple, Google Inc. and most recently Amazon.com are now focusing on creating a variety of distinguished apps in their Apps Store in order to differentiate themselves from their competitors as well as provide the consumers with convenient and innovative apps.  Apple was the first company to launch its store back in 2008, offering its consumers a wide range of apps ranging from music, books, and games to newspapers and magazines. In fact, it is said that Apple has more than 350 000 apps now. Following Apple is Google Inc. with the second largest number of apps through its Android Market. The article “Trying to stand out in Apps crowd” highlights the differences between the number and choices of apps that are provided by both Apple and Google. Most importantly, the main point to take from this article is the popularity of the Apps Store in becoming a new investment opportunity. The consumer electronics industry is not only producing different devices, it is also presenting opportunities for developers to get creative in terms of establishing unique apps at competitive prices. I think this provides a chance for other non -consumer electronics companies to market themselves by creating apps. For instance, Apple offers apps for major stores like Forever 21, Zara and many more. The Apps Market is definitely opening the doors to potentially creative innovators as well as to companies operating in different markets/industries.

Best Buys Decline

It has recently been revealed that Best Buy is suffering through a weak period in terms of revenue and profit. As the world's largest electronics retailer by sales, it somewhat amazes me that in the generation we live in today with the amount of technology, and the expansion of technology, that the world's leader in electronics is not doing well. The main reason for this is the variety of different retailers nowadays that are taking away from Best Buy. Amazon and Wal-Mart, heavily on the rise, has taken away from Best Buy's ability to consume the amount of sales it needs to obtain to maintain the leader of the pack.

One of the reasons that Best Buy's sales have been decreasing is because the new 3D products that are being created are not selling as much as people thought they would. The kinks within the 3D products, causing headaches and nausea, have led to less of these products being sold. Best Buy, having spent money on the availability to sell these items has backfired. Seems to be that 3D products aren't doing as well as originally thought. I could have predicted that based on the symptoms you get from these products.

The Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo recently released the Nintendo 3DS, a 3D videogame that works without 3D glasses. As groundbreaking as the device is, there have been reports that it causes dizziness. This really brought down the reputation of the device. In addition, the breakthrough of the device turned negative when Nintendo added a warning to say that the device could cause vision damage for children 6 years old or younger. A lot is riding on this system, because the videogame industry has fallen a lot due to the advancement of smart phones.

I saw the Nintendo 3Ds in Best Buy and spent about 10 minutes playing on it. I thought that it was so exciting and ground breaking to be able to see in 3D without glasses. However, after a few minutes I began to feel dizzy. I felt as if I was looking at the device cross-eyed. I can definitely see how it could cause vision damage in small children. I personally would not buy this device because I don't think that I could play too long without getting a headache. Also, the 3D can only be see in one angle. However, I still think that it is really cool. I think that this device definitely has some potential. It just needs some adjustments.

The Xoom versus the iPad

While the Motorola Xoom was once considered better than the iPad, with the release of the iPad 2, Motorolla might be in trouble. Motorolola's Xoom tablet has been one of the biggest competitiors of the iPad. The Xoom cost more to make than Apple's first iPad. People that preferred the Xoom to the iPad found that its display had a higher resolution, and they liked that it had a front and rear camera that allowed them to video chat. Although it was better than the iPad, the Xoom was much more expensive to make. Motorola priced the Xoom at $799, excluding the wireless service contract, as compared to a similar iPad that sells for $729. Because the Xoom can be upgraded free to the 4G cellular technology, the company's chief executive believes that the price for the Xoom is reasonable. When Motorola heard of Apple's iPad 2, their prices went up even more, as they aimed for even better quality.

Now that the iPad 2 is out, several people are extremely excited about it. Most people find that the iPad 2 runs a lot faster, and has much better features. The best feature that people find is the case that folds up and and cleans the screen, but that also works as a stand for the iPad. In addition, the iPad now also has a front and rear camera. I feel that although the Xoom also has great quality, the iPad 2 will definitely be great competition. In the end, I believe that it will ultimately come down to whichever company people prefer.

Why We Prize That Magical Mystery Pad

Many skeptics didn't think the iPad was going to make it. They thought it might actually fail. Could Apple finally do something wrong? Nope, this wasn't the case, as the iPad 2 is about to be released, we now know that the iPad has been completely succesful. Everyone is trying to copy it, trying to make something just as good. As everyone tries to create something just as good as the iPod, iPhone and iPad, Apple looks to create something even better, more innovative.

So what's the next step for Apple? I don't really know, but the iPad 2 has seemed to bridge some of the gaps that the first iPad lacked. Apple will continue to make better versions of the iPad. When the iPad first came out I never wanted to get one. Why would I need something like this. Either my phone or my computer could do something like this. It seemed a little bulky but now it is starting to look enticing. I think I want one because it is less bulky than my computer and it is faster than my phone. After time, Apple products seem to grow on me and my generation.

Internet Marketing

Since we’ve been focusing recently on marketing and its major role in not only identifying customers’ needs but also persuading them into buying a product, I’ve chosen to blog about a recent article posted on Wall Street Journal concerning this topic. The article “Here, tweeting is a class requirement” discusses an interesting way of marketing a product that Sprint has adopted to promote its new 4G network. Basically, the company has provided a class at Boston Emerson College with smart phones and unlimited service and access to the Internet in order to promote this new network. Those students can tweet, Facebook, produce videos on YouTube and implement any other ideas that they might have in order to spread the word to other students about the new network.
I think that Sprint was very smart when it chose to adopt this marketing technique for many reasons. First, identifying young people and students as their primary targets, Sprint brilliantly found a way to reach its targets by giving a portion (the class at the university) the opportunity to promote the product. This not only helps Sprint reach its targeted people but also provides an opportunity for those students to be creative when marketing the product. Second, using the Internet as a marketing technique or medium to inform customers about the existence of your product is smart. This is because the Internet can reach a wide audience from around the world and using popular websites like Twitter and Facebook will guarantee the attraction of many customers. In addition, the Internet is a faster and much cheaper way of conducting marketing.

BlackBerry PlayBook will support Android apps, RIM rep proclaims

Interesting time for a Blackberry to include android applications on one of its tablets. While I never have owned a blackberry, my friends complain about the lack of applications you can have. If they were to include some of these apps how would this compare to Apple products? I know I'm always comparing these products to Apple, but isn't that the standard these days? Anyway, this combination would create a great tablet that would compete considering the good things Blackberry does with their good communicating applications.

While I admit my first choice would still be an iPad, with Apple unveiling a new iPad later this week, competition continues to show up everywhere with many different rivals. The Xoom will also be unleashed soon and the tablet market is becoming very competitive. All I know is the good competition should drive prices lower, so from a consumers standpoint, let the competition for the best tablet continue!

From Traditional Chargers to Charging Pads

Charging pads allow you to charge your phone without the mess of the wires. You would never again have add more stress to your life by untangling wires, because a pad eliminates that. All one must do to use a charging device is to lay your device down on the pad to charge it. The pad is covered with panels that conduct energy and charge the device. So why are people still using regular chargers? One of the reasons is because these devices come with the charging cords, so many people find it useless to buy what they don't need. Another reason is because sometimes phones need certain cases that correspond with the pad for it to work. For these reasons, manufacturers are starting to incorporate the technology of charging pads at the design level of their products. A company called Wireless Power Consortium created an international standard for wireless charging called the Qi. This intends to make the charging pad easier to use, by building technology in so that phones don't require a certain sleeve.

I would definitely consider charging my phone with a charging pad. I personally get very frustrated wrapping up my cords each morning, putting them away, and then taking them out again when my phone dies. I think that charging pads are definitely a technology of the future, but they need some improvements first. Once changes are made to improve the charging pad, I think that companies should begin merging with big phone companies. This would allow the change to be made from regular chargers to the new charging pad. I believe that the charging pad definitely has major potential, but first changes need to be made.

Competition in the CE industry

The consumer electronics industry has been moving at a high pace these last two decades. With technological advancements and cheaper production costs, major companies are now competing to create innovative products that both meet and satisfy their consumers’ wants. Apple, Motorola, Samsung and other big name companies are now facing the pressure of not only meeting their consumers’ wants but also coming up with great ideas for their existing product lines thus creating a competitive advantage against the many competitors in their market. I’m sure that everybody is aware of Apple’s production of the new iPad. Of course, it will include new improvements’ and features that the current iPad lacks. According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, it says that Apple has been facing threats in the tablet market, especially with other major companies releasing new products like Dell and Motorola. For that reason, Apple is moving quickly to release the new iPad and attract as many consumers as possible in order to raise its revenues and crush its competitors.

The Atrix 4G- A Phone and a Laptop Combined

While many people use the Internet on their phones, several people would agree that computers are still necessary tools to our lives. However, this may not be the case much longer. Recently, the Motorola Mobility released the Atrix 4G-a phone that serves as both a computer and a laptop. The phone comes with a laptop dock, with an 11.6 inch-screen, full keyboard, touch pad, and stereo speakers. Until the Atrix is plugged into this dock, the dock does not work. Once the phone is connected to the dock the laptop replicates the phone's screen on the laptop and allows users to use the apps. In addition, the dock charges the phone while it is plugged in. This phone can be purchased through AT&T's network.

I feel that this idea is brilliant. Phone screens are much too small to replace computers. This will allow people to have their computer and phone in once with a bigger screen and a larger keyboard. I think that this new phone will ultimately be fair competition for the iPhone. I can see this new technology as getting really big. It is amazing to see how far we have come in the world of technology.

iHome Teams With New Balance For Headphones

Headphones designed to monitor your heart rate and caloric burn seem to be a new technology recently made. Think about this for a second.. headphones that can determine your heart rate. The technology is so advances today, it makes me wonder how advanced it can become. This past decade, we have had as many technology breakthroughs as we have ever had possibly. These headphones use an in-line heart-rate monitor and a pedometer to track your heart rate and caloric burn. Other features include a BMI calculator, real-time voice-over feedback, chronograph, rechargeable battery and stats tracker. So much technology built in to one headphone by the amazing Apple once again. Apple is on top of the consumer electronic world right now, and the production of these unique types of new technology will continue to grow as time goes on.

Come competition can't compete with iPad

As companies try to compete with Apple's iPad, the lower prices may not be worth the discount you get. Dell recently released the Streak 7, a tablet for $200. While this sounds great, it may not be everything it lives up to. According to the article, you get what you pay for. So while you are paying less, you are getting less? Maybe it's still a good investment maybe not. There are many features like a flash player, lighter weight, and camera on the back that the iPad doesn't have. This could be a good investment for people to buy. Still, I want to see something go straight against the iPad. If there was no price difference, what would we choose? Seems like the iPad still. This topic almost seems like other android phones competing with the iPhone. Android systems were starting to compete, but since the iPhone came to Verizon, that's all anyone seems to be talking about. Will anyone ever compete with Apple?

Motorola’s Atrix 4G

One might think that the new Atrix 4G -revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas- is just another Android phone with one or two extra features that differentiates it from the Iphone 4G. Well, think again! This new phone is not only a phone but also a tool processor once connected to a dock. The phone possesses many distinct features including a high definition camera on the back as well as a fingerprint scanner. It runs at 3G and 4G networks at a high speed and also minimizes battery drain.  As soon as you connect the phone to the dock, it starts acting like the brain of the laptop (since the laptop does not have a processor nor a memory) and the screen on the phone appears directly on the laptop screen in a matter of seconds. From that point, you can do whatever you want: log into the Internet, download movies and music and even receive phone calls! The phone is priced at 200 dollars with a two-year contract with AT&T but this price increases to 500 dollars if purchased with the laptop.
Personally, I was not very excited about this new phone once I first read about it. However, after watching the commercials and different reportages, I understood more how it worked and was also fascinated about the innovativeness that it has brought. I would definitely consider purchasing one!

3D the new electronic buzz

The early 2000's brought about the plasma tv, which at the time amazed people of the picture you can watch on such a flat TV. Now, we enter a new evolution of TV watching by; enter 3D. MasterImage 3D enables users to see glasses-free 3D TV on a 7 inch tablet computer screen. What has the technology come to today that we can see 3D without any glasses. It's amazing to think of the advancements that this country, and world, has made over the past generations. Many different companies, such as Panasonic and Sony (my last blog) have been trying to figure out new ways to accumulate 3D TV into a regular day life of watching TV. However, this 3D idea is spreading quickly and it makes me wonder how in years to come the technology will continue to grow and create new innovative technology.

Wireless Wallets? What can't we turn into electronic media..

Soon we'll be able to leave our house without our wallets. It'll be just one less thing we need to remember to bring when we go out. How about IDs? Will our plastic ID's always be plastic cards to carry around. I think it would be awesome to have one thing to worry about, but what are our consumer electronics limited to? Ten years from now, what will be the next big thing? So many questions to think about as our society becomes more technologically savvy everyday. Electronic wallets do lead to an interesting questions. Are they reliable? With all of the tech gurus out there can these cards be copied? Stealing a persons identity could be easier than ever. I think once these things become personalized they become very dangerous. While something like an electronic wallet can be creative and easier, the risks are still there. Beware users.

Chris

The iPhone or the BlackBerry? That is the Question.

While the BlackBerry was once considered the most popular smartphone, today it appears that the iPhone is taking over that role-especially in the business world. Last month, two Deutsch Bank analysists traded in their BlackBerrys for iPhones, in order to do a two-month trial. One of the analysists concluded that "after testing corporate email on iPhone for the past few months, there is no going back" (Whitmore). Now, UBS confirmed that over 1,000 staff members are participating in a pilot program with the iPhone or the iPad. Several workers have expressed that it is much easier and faster to access data on the iPhone than on the BlackBerry. Last year, Standard Chartered became the first bank to switch to Apple, as it gave iPhones to 15,000 of its employees. I believe that several other companies will begin using iPhones as well. iPhones have a very well-respected reputation. With pilot programs in place like the one with UBS, I believe that several workers will favor the iPhone. While I have never owned a BlackBerry or an iPhone, several of my friends own iPhones and are extremely happy with them. Today, it seems that more people favor iPhones over BlackBerry's. If I had a choice, I would pick the iPhone because I am a big fan of Apple products, and trust their company. I have also heard many wonderful things about the iPhone, whereas I have heard that the Blackberry has slow Internet.

The Super Bowl

The biggest sporting event in this country brings about the best in peoples wallets. Families hosting parties often want the top notch technology to entertain their guests. Compared to the 80's when technology was at a minimum, today, people can rely on a top notch sony or panasonic 3d tv, or a bigger projector screen. Optoma and Sony, the elite projector companies, allow for audiences to watch tv in high quality, as well as a huge picture. The original and classic plasma tv will continue to entertain guests with its crisp picture. The options are endless in a technologically advanced society that is the United States.

AT&T vs. Verizon

Everybody has been talking about the new Apple carrier Verizon that has become the major competitor and potential threat to AT&T. Although since its launch in 2007, AT&T was the only Iphone network provider, this year however, a new provider has emerged introducing potential opportunities as well as threats to future consumers. Upon reading different articles including the article on Wall Street Journal “Verizon beats AT&T in voice calls in Iphones,” I have learned the different features of each of the two providers. For instance, Verizon is said (according to article) to offer better data plans including monthly plans as cheap as 30 dollars for unlimited data as well as wireless hot-spot plans whereas AT&T are now offering 15 to 25$ plans with limited data only. Another feature that has distinguished Verizon is its voice calls. On the other hand, AT&T is said to have high speed downloading data, which could attract more consumers especially those interested in downloading their emails and other documents on their iphones. Also, AT&T could operate overseas whereas Verizon can’t.
After reading this article, I think I would still stick with AT&T mainly because I go back home to Jordan very often and I would like for my Iphone to work there even if it means higher roaming rates.  Also, being able to check my emails and download large files fast enough is something very important to me and AT&T has given me the chance to do so.

Social Responsibility of CE Companies

For this blog, I went to different companies' mission statements and Corporate Responsibility Reports. One can clearly see the company's values throughout both of these things. In Sony's mission statement they express: "Sony is committed to developing a wide range of innovative products and multimedia services that challenge the way consumers access and enjoy digital entertainment. By ensuring synergy between businesses within the organisation, Sony is constantly striving to create exciting new worlds of entertainment that can be experienced on a variety of different products." From this mission statement, one can see that Sony is always striving to advance, and that they want to please their customers.

IBM states that its corporate responsibility efforts "are tightly aligned with [their] strategic business priorities, and integral to all [their] relationships-with clients, employees, and communities worldwide". In addition, they list that "IBM is committed to environmental leadership in all of its business activities, from its operations to the design of its products and use of its technology". From the corporate responsibilities listed on IBM's website, one can see that their values are for the best interest of their clients and for the environment.

By looking at these company's mission statements, their values can be seen very clearly. Both of these companies show the relationship between their business and society. It is important to have a strong corporate responsibility report and a strong mission statement so that the consumers can trust the company.

Philips buys Indian appliance maker Preethi

This article may seem very insignificant, however, when you look deeper into what Philips did, it tells you something important about this company. A company has to be alert at all times and take advantage of anything that could benefit their business. In this instance, Philips buying the Indian appliance maker Preethi shows how aggressive Philips is. There is no room to just get by while in the business world with the hundreds/thousands of companies competing over wealth and prosperity. This comes to show that Philips, while known for its consumer electronics, is flexible when there is a chance to prosper on a company such as Preethi. As stated in the article, the purchase of Preethi makes "Philips the clear leader in this specific fast-growing segment within the Indian domestic appliances market." This transaction shows that Philips is on the top of its game and is willing to do whatever is possible to benefit the most and take in the most profit.

Top Ten Mission Statements

This website gives their opinion on top mission statements throughout all the industries. Because some of these companies have very different goals, their mission is different for every situation. One thing I think that is so great about all these mission statements is the fact of how simple some of them are. For instance, Health Net, a large health insurer, has the mission statement, "To help people be healthy, secure, and comfortable." Eight words creates an idea for the entire company. Now the statements don't have to be this short, but being concise definitely helps in their case. I know what Health Net wants to do with their company.
More specifically inside the Consumer Electronics realm, Sony creates a pretty good mission statement. Their goal is to, "To experience the joy of advancing and applying technology for the benefit of the public." I know what I'm getting when I buy from these companies. All across the industry companies create solid mission statements. Although a mission statement is something that may be overlooked, it can definitely impact a customers idea of whether to use the company or not. These companies have created solid mission statements that really show what they want to do.

Beware of your apps!

A recent Wall Street Journal investigation revealed that certain Android and Iphone apps violated users’ privacy. By downloading apps such as: games, Pandora, TextPlus 4 (text messaging app) and many other apps, users were essentially sending basic information about themselves without their awareness or even consent. In fact, these phones are said to have the ability to transmit information including your name, gender, age, your device’s ID number and many more data to a number of online tracking companies and ad firms as well. While Apple claimed that it does not transmit information about its users nor does it obtain any information about them without their consent, the investigation tested a number of apps and found out that it is not true; certain apps where revealing the location of users without asking permission.

This article has left me in awe. I had never taken into consideration the possibility of collecting information about me just from the apps that I download on my Iphone. It is unbelievable and scary how basic data including: location, gender, name and even a phone’s zip code could be transmitted so easily and in a matter of seconds to a number of ad companies. Not only does it invade one’s privacy but it also makes him/her an easy target for ad companies as well as the possibility of identity theft.  In addition to that, I think that companies like Apple should ensure better privacy settings for their users to make sure that they are protected against these kinds of issues. After reading this article, I became more aware of what actually could happen when I download certain apps and now I will think twice before downloading any.

Apple and the Ethical/Business Problems of Child Labor and Other Unsavory Practices

Hey guys I know this article is a little outdated, but it leads to many ethical dilemmas faced throughout the world today. Child labor is definitely something that big companies don't want to talk about and it definitely doesn't help when workers end up sick from substances they use. The combination of the two creates even more problems. So what can these companies do in the future to create better solutions? Too many times we do use the "don't ask don't tell" kind of theory to hide these laborers, but is this ethically right? Is this what Apple and other big corporations want us to see? I don't think so. While legislation of where companies can find suppliers may make the situation even more companies, I think some of these companies need to make changes that help these child laborers. Price shouldn't be the main factor as these kids work in awful conditions. If they want to continue to hide these workers, I'm sure activist groups will continue to make the public aware. Apple needs to stand up for their morals and create better working conditions.

RIM Faces Ethical Dilemmas

Research In Motion Ltd (RIM), the maker of BackBerry, has experienced several ethical challenges. One example of an ethical challenge that RIM has faced is with the Indonesian government, which told its countries Internet service providers to block customers from viewing pornographic websites. RIM had to decide whether it was ethical to block people from viewing porn or not. Is it right to block what people see? Motivated to keep good relations with Indonesia, RIM decided to install filters on the phones before the actual deadline.

Another example has to do with BlackBerry encryption. India feared that encryptions make RIMs smartphones allows terrorists to remain anonymous. RIM faced the ethical dilemma of whether they should keep the feature of encryptions or not. Is it worth it to have a feature that makes it easier for terrorists to be anonymous? In efforts to compromise, RIM chose to provide tools for Indian security agencies so that they could access messenger services. I do not agree with RIM's decision to filter pornography from Indonesian smart phones, because I do not believe that it is ethical to block people from seeing what they want to see. However, I do understand that Indonesia is a big consumer of RIM's products, so compromising with them ultimately helped their business. However, I do agree that RIM made the right move in providing told for Indian security agencies to access messenger services so that it is more difficult for terrorists to remain anonymous. I believe that ultimately, RIM has handled both situations in a strategic way for their business.

iPad, the new textbook for students.

The iPad has become the new textbook for college students in a number of US universities. Students are now provided with iPads as a new educational tool which substitutes for heavy books. This article posted on Wall Street Journal discusses the impact of technology and the emergence of such creative electronics in facilitating the educational process. Prof. Angst teaching at the University of Notre Dame reveals the advantages of this new learning technique as a more appealing and desirable method to keep classes more interesting as well as engaging students in participating more in class discussions. He said that although students are now more likely to go on Facebook or other sites, nonetheless, it has not affected their distraction level. I found this article very intriguing, because it shows how technology has become an essential part of our lives especially now that universities are providing students with iPads just to do their readings and other homework. This new technology has brought many advantages for students and will definitely encourage more universities to adopt this method. Creative electronics like the iPad has made learning more fun and entertaining!

LG's 3D TV

The Consumer Electronic show held in Las Vegas is home to the newest technology in the country, as well as the world. This year, LG Electronics was praised for the creation of a cinema 3D TV. Recently, other such companies have created the 3D TV, however, have had complaints on the vision of the TV's because of the shutter glass used in them. LG's new 3D TV eliminates the dizziness and eye fatigue that some persons get from watching 3D TV because of the new Film-type Patterned Retarder(FPR). This is the future of 3D TV's because instead of only getting the 3D picture through the glasses that users in the world are accustom too, now the 3D images are created through polarized film attached to the actual panel. This alleviates the pressure on the eyes and doesn't harmfully affect one's eyes either. Right now, LG's new 3D TV will have other companies such as Panasonic, Mitsubishi, and Samsung hard pressed to find buyers on there 3D products based on LG's newer and better technology. This will directly affect the stocks of these 3 companies, most likely heading toward a decrease, meanwhile LG's products are sure to increase the stocks based on the higher quality product out right now. Although LG is prospering with the best 3D TV, it is only a matter of time until all the popular TV companies are battling it out to create the best 3D TV. As 3D TV is the future in the making already, companies around the world will be figuring out the best ways to assemble a 3D TV.
